Chapter 39
Saige
I was grateful for the hoodie. It was uglier than sin, but it was warm. My light sweater did nothing to ward off the chill coming from the water. I huddled in the folding chair Nash insisted on buying. We all had one, with Jaceâs chair being smaller and perfect for his size.
âAll right,â Nash said as he opened up the white Styrofoam bowl. âReach in there and grab a worm.â
I felt my lip involuntarily curling at the thought of Jace grabbing a worm. I watched as he dug his fingers into the dirt and came up with a worm. âNow what?â he asked Nash.
Nash had the hook in his hand. I was picturing the thing embedding in Jaceâs finger or a gust of wind coming up and catching it in his eye. âWe need to put the worm on the hook,â he announced.
âHow?â Jace asked as the worm stretched and curled between his fingers.
âWe have to poke it on the hook,â Nash answered. âIâll do the first one. Then you can do the next one.â
Jace watched with wonderment as Nash put the worm on the hook. âDoes it hurt him?â he asked.
Nash shook his head. âNah, worms donât mind.â
I was about to give them a wet wipe to clean the dirt and worm goo from their hands, but Nash wiped his hands on his jeans. His expensive designer jeans that were not exactly meant for dirt and grime. Jace imitated him and never looked prouder to get dirty.
I watched as Nash went through every step of casting the line. He was so patient with Jace. The Nash standing on the shoreline was nothing like the man I saw in the office every day. I found myself imagining the two of them spending more time together. I could already see the positive influence Nash was having on Jace. My little man looked like he was on top of the world with that fishing pole in his hand. He constantly looked up at Nash and adjusted his hands or the way he stood to perfectly imitate Nash.
âLetâs sit down,â Nash said after they cast out a few times.
âDo you want a wipe?â I asked Jace.
He sat down with his pole between his legs. âNope. Iâm good.â
Nash winked. âHeâs catching on quick.â
âHeâs having fun,â I agreed.
âAre you warm enough?â he asked.
I smiled and looked down at the ugly green hoodie. âI am. Thanks for this. Iâll pay you when we get back to the car.â
âNo, you wonât. I like that look on you. Weâre going to have to get you matching pants.â
âNot a chance in hell.â I laughed.
He grinned. âGive it some time. Jace is going to convince you to go hunting next.â
I scoffed. âWhen pigs fly, youâll see me traipsing through the woods with a gun in hand.â
âNash?â Jace said.
He turned his attention to Jace. âWhatâs up, buddy?â
My heart warmed at the way he spoke to him. âSomethingâs wrong with my pole,â Jace said.
âWhatâs wrong?â
âIt keeps jerking,â Jace said with confusion.
